数学代写|复分析作业代写Complex function代考|Rotations of the Sphere as Möbius Transformations
This subsection is optional because its main result is only needed in Chapter 6 . Furthermore, in that chapter we shall treat the same result in a much better and simpler way; the only purpose of this subsection is to further illustrate the connections that exist between Möbius transformations and linear algebra.
Let us investigate what it might mean to say that two vectors $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathbf{q}$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are “orthogonal”. Two vectors $\mathbf{p}$ and $\mathbf{q}$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ are orthogonal if and only if their dot product vanishes:
$$
\mathbf{p} \cdot \mathbf{q}=\left(\begin{array}{l}
p_1 \
p_2
\end{array}\right) \cdot\left(\begin{array}{l}
q_1 \
q_2
\end{array}\right)=p_1 q_1+p_2 q_2=0
$$
Thus it would seem natural to say that $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathfrak{q}$ are “orthogonal” if $\mathfrak{p} \cdot \mathbf{q}=0$. This will not do. In particular, whereas we would like the dot product of any nonzero vector with itself to be a positive real number, we find that $\left[\begin{array}{l}1 \ i\end{array}\right] \cdot\left[\begin{array}{l}1 \ i\end{array}\right]=0$, for example. As it stands, the dot product is not suitable for use in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
The standard solution to this difficulty is to generalize the dot product $\mathfrak{p} \cdot \mathbf{q}$ to the so-called inner product,$\langle\mathbf{p}, \mathbf{q}\rangle \equiv \overline{\mathbf{p}} \cdot \mathbf{q}$ :
$$
\langle\mathbf{p}, \mathfrak{q}\rangle=\left\langle\left[\begin{array}{l}
\mathfrak{p}_1 \
\mathfrak{p}_2
\end{array}\right],\left[\begin{array}{l}
\mathfrak{q}_1 \
\mathfrak{q}_2
\end{array}\right]\right\rangle=\overline{\mathfrak{p}_1} \mathfrak{q}_1+\overline{\mathfrak{p}_2} \mathfrak{q}_2
$$
We cannot go into all the reasons why this is the “right” generalization, but observe that it shares the following desirable properties of the dot product:
$$
\begin{aligned}
& \langle\mathfrak{p}, \mathfrak{p}\rangle \geqslant 0 \quad \text { and } \quad\langle\mathfrak{p}, \mathfrak{p}\rangle=0 \text { if and only if } \mathfrak{p}_1=0=\mathfrak{p}_2 ; \
& \langle\mathfrak{p}+\mathbf{q}, \mathbf{r}\rangle=\langle\mathfrak{p}, \mathbf{r}\rangle+\langle\mathbf{q}, \mathbf{r}\rangle \quad \text { and } \quad\langle\mathbf{r}, \mathfrak{p}+\mathbf{q}\rangle=\langle\mathbf{r}, \mathfrak{p}\rangle+\langle\mathbf{r}, \mathfrak{q}\rangle .
\end{aligned}
$$
Note, however, that it is not commutative: $\langle\mathbf{q}, \mathbf{p}\rangle=\overline{\langle\mathbf{p}, \mathbf{q}\rangle}$.
Although the decomposition (3.3) of a general Möbius transformation $M(z)$ has proved valuable in obtaining results, it makes $\mathrm{M}(z)$ appear much more complicated than it is. In this section we will reveal this hidden simplicity by examining the fixed points in greater detail; this will enable us to visualize Möbius transformations in a particularly vivid way. In the process we will clarify our earlier remark that Möbius transformations can be classified into four types, each $M(z)$ being “equivalent” to one (and only one) of the four types of transformation illustrated in [3.26]. The lovely idea behind this classification scheme is due to Felix Klein.
To begin with, suppose that $M(z)$ has two distinct fixed points, $\xi_{+}$and $\xi_{-}$. Now look at the LHS of [3.29], and in particular at the family $\mathcal{C}_1$ of circles [shown dashed] passing through the fixed points. If we think of $M(z)$ as a mapping $z \mapsto w=$ $\mathrm{M}(z)$ of this figure to itself, then each member of $\mathrm{C}_1$ is mapped to another member of $\mathcal{C}_1$. Why?
Still with reference to the LHS of [3.29], suppose that $p$ [not shown] is an arbitrary point on the line through $\xi_{+}$and $\xi_{-}$, but lying outside the segment connecting the fixed points. If $\mathrm{K}$ is the circle of radius $\sqrt{\left[p \xi_{+}\right]\left[p \xi_{-}\right]}$centred at $\mathrm{p}$, then $\xi_{+}$and $\xi_{-}$ are symmetric with respect to $\mathrm{K}$. Thus $\mathrm{K}$ cuts each member of $\mathcal{C}1$ at right angles (cf. [3.9]). By varying the position of $p$ we thus obtain a family $\mathcal{C}_2$ of circles [shown solid] such that $\xi{+}$and $\xi_{-}$are symmetric with respect to each member of $\mathcal{C}_2$, and each member of $\mathrm{C}_2$ is orthogonal to each member of $\mathrm{C}_1$.
Now we come to the main idea: to the LHS of [3.29] we apply a Möbius transformation $F(z)$ that sends one fixed point (say $\xi_{+}$) to 0 , and the other fixed point $\left(\xi_{-}\right)$to $\infty$. The RHS of [3.29] shows the image of the LHS under such a Möbius transformation, the simplest example of which is
$$
F(z)=\frac{z-\xi_{+}}{z-\xi_{-}}
$$
[Note that we have not bothered to write this in normalized form.] Since $F$ is a Möbius transformation, it must map the members of $\mathcal{C}1$ to the circles passing through 0 and $\infty$, i.e., to lines through the origin [shown dashed]. Furthermore, since $F$ is conformal, two such lines must contain the same angle at 0 as the corresponding $C_1$ circles do at $\xi{+}$. We have tried to make this easy to see in our picture by drawing $\mathcal{C}1$ circles passing through $\xi{+}$in evenly spaced directions, each one making an angle of $(\pi / 6)$ with the next.

$$
\mathbf{p} \cdot \mathbf{q}=\left(p_1 p_2\right) \cdot\left(q_1 q_2\right)=p_1 q_1+p_2 q_2=0
$$
$$
\langle\mathbf{p}, \mathfrak{q}\rangle=\left\langle\left[\mathfrak{p}_1 \mathfrak{p}_2\right],\left[\mathfrak{q}_1 \mathfrak{q}_2\right]\right\rangle=\overline{\mathfrak{p}_1} \mathfrak{q}_1+\overline{\mathfrak{p}_2} \mathfrak{q}_2
$$
$$
\langle\mathfrak{p}, \mathfrak{p}\rangle \geqslant 0 \quad \text { and } \quad\langle\mathfrak{p}, \mathfrak{p}\rangle=0 \text { if and only if } \mathfrak{p}_1=0=\mathfrak{p}_2 ; \quad\langle\mathfrak{p}+\mathbf{q}, \mathbf{r}\rangle=\langle\mathfrak{p}, \mathbf{r}\rangle+\langle\mathbf{q}, \mathbf{r}\rangle
$$
